So today will be a hard day filled with a fussy baby who is teething, shots and possibly some baby food or rice cereal. J has his four month doctor's appointment today and all I can think about is the discomfort and pain he will be in when I hold him down for his shots. Maybe I can get his daddy to hold him down this time.
Man four months...I can't believe its here already. Where did the time go? I look back at the pictures of him when he was first born and he has grown so much! My little six pounder is possibly 12 or more pounds now. He's an active little one who loves to stand and walk when you hold his hands....although it gets tiring after a while. I really think he will be walking by 7 months! Tummy time is no chore anymore and he doesn't scream after a few minutes of being on tummy time. He rolls to his tummy willingly and grabs a toy then rolls to his back and puts it in his mouth. When he's on his tummy he tries to scoot off with his legs but just can't coordinate it enough, then it usually ends with a high pitched frustrated scream and a tantrum until I roll him over....as if he forgot all of a sudden that he can roll himself over.
These days our days are filled with entertaining my little guy with one thing or another all day long. First we start out with floor time until he screams and gets bored with that, then we move to the saucer while mommy makes breakfast and her morning cup of coffee, then the walker...but he can't even put his feet down in it yet, so he just grabs and bats at the toys on the walker. I also have a jumper for him that hangs in the door way of his room. He doesn't like it as much as I thought he would. After a few minutes he screams to get out. This morning I spent some time jumping him in it and smiling real big for him as I tried to show him this is fun. He grinned right back and finally got the hang of it...but then got bored very quickly after that. Then we move on to mommy hold me time. This is the time when he really doesn't know what he wants. He fights sleep, so putting him down for a nap is a chore!!! He will rub his eyes and cry and then when he notices himself dosing off he kicks and cries some more. The only solution to this is to breastfeed him until he falls asleep....then I set him down in his bobby, wrap some blankets around him and hope to get at least 20 minutes to myself.
Those days when he was just born where he slept for hours on end...are now gone. I am lucky if I get 2 hours of nap time total out of him during the day. This makes getting things done around the house very difficult. Its not like you can wash dishes and hold a baby at the same time.
Many times just putting him in the car seat and running out to do errands will put him to sleep like that, despite transporting the little fella to shopping carts and his stroller and being jostled around, he never wakes. Its the weirdest thing. So I take advantage of this for as long as I can. After I'm done bringing everything in from the car. I will leave him in his car seat in the living room asleep until he wakes up. This is the opportunity I have to clean the house, or even eat a meal uninterrupted.
Then when he wakes he floods me with heart warming smiles, (the best time to get smiles out of him) we cuddle for a bit before we start playtime all over again. Now that he's found his voice its always filled with high pitched excited shrieks, funny faces and shocked looks when you do something new.....like raspberries! Just this week he learned to laugh. Hearing that giggle the first time was like seeing him smile for the first time. Then of course like his smile, every time I get the video camera out I can't get him to do it again, the little turd.
Is mommy life all I expected it to be? Yes and no. I knew it would be hard, and I knew I would get a kick out of all of his firsts and that they would be special to me. But I didn't know that sitting here as he's breastfeeding listening to him grunt as he is pooing and then flashing me a big "ha ha you gotta change me" grin would get me to laugh. He's given me the ability to lighten up a bit I think.
At any rate, he may be starting a new stage in his infancy soon. FOOD!! Ah Oh!!!
