How Cautious Should You Be When It Comes To Germs?

Am I a "germ-a-phobe" or just a cautious parent? Sometimes I think ignorance is bliss because if I really didn't care about the transfer of germs from things to people or people to things and such, I'd just let my kid run around, touch everything and maybe have a lot more fun. But I know in the process he will be a lot sicker. Its a sick world out there and one of the many things my husband and I told ourselves we would never allow J Myster to play in (or on) were the McDonald's ball pits and those kiddie play areas in malls. Whenever I've gone to the mall we very quickly rush by the place hoping J doesn't see or inquire about it. So when I needed to get some things done last week a relative of mine took him for a few hours. When he was brought back I learned of his whereabouts. "Eeeek" I was secretly hoping no sickness would transpire, but realized sometimes you just can't keep kids from getting sick. They have to interact and have fun with people and they will get sick. I did however learn about Hand Foot and Mouth Disease and now my son is taking a mouth wash because he's contracted something viral that makes his tongue hurt. It saddens me, but it is what it is. At least he didn't contract some flesh eating bacteria like that girl in GA.

Exposing your kids to "dirt" is important for them to build immunity and new research suggests it can also help ward off allergies.  I sort of deal with it like food - most things in moderation. Obviously you have to use common sense.  I'll let my daughter play in a ball pit but I wouldn't let her touch, say a cutting board that I just cut raw meat on.  Hand and mouth is pretty common, yep it sucks but think of it as another immune building opportunity!

Well, this is right up my alley. Were're getting done with Hand Foot & Mouth right now (from my older sister's daughter) and are refusing to go to my parents house until they get over their (currently 2-month) bout with MRSA. They think i'm crazy about refusing contact with the MRSA-infectees, but there's NO WAY I want that anywhere near my family.

True story: I was shopping with mr. pants the other day when he picked up a cheeto he found on the ground and ate it before I could get to him. A worker saw this and was obviously grossed out. I said, "well, he's doing his part to build his immune system" lol I was mortified. But it was too late for anything other then levity ;) I do think it's best to let them get dirty though. The more their tiny bodies fight of when they are little, the better. There is a lot of research that suggests that they are healthier in the long run for it. :)  And (((hug)))) to your little guy! HF&M is AWFUL! Lots of popcicles and cool baths helped my kiddies.

EEEWW!!!!  When we were getting our maternity pictures taken in Sedona, J myster almost picked up a crack pipe that was by one of the creeks we were shooting by. Thankfully Hunky Hubs caught it in enough time and it never touched his little hands. I'm so thankful for that!

Oh. My. Gosh. OMG! That is so much worse than a dirty cheeto. I'm so glad he didn't touch it!!

J's Cousin has had MRSA since he was like 1 off and on, I'm kind of afraid for the two of them to play together. I don't know a lot about MRSA, but I do know that his cousin's sister who is 8 months old now has not gotten it yet nor has his parents, I don't think. I'm really nervous about this one.
